Man’s Best Friend

Did you know that the first recorded use of the phrase "a dog is man's best friend" was by Frederick the Great of Prussia? King Frederick the Great was German so I'm guessing he actually said "Hund ist der beste Freund des Menschen" and was referring to his beloved Italian Greyhound. A king who loves dogs can't be all bad.

The saying was popularized in an Ogden Nash poem:

The dog is man's best friend.
He has a tail on one end.
Up in front he has teeth.
And four legs underneath.
